baaskoormus

Baaskoormus is a term used in some Finnish-language discussions of electric power systems to denote the base load of an electrical grid—the portion of demand that is consistently present and must be served by continuously running generation capacity. In practice, baaskoormus corresponds to what is commonly called base load in English, though its usage is not universally standardized in Finnish, with some sources preferring terms like peruskuormitus instead.

Etymology and scope are uncertain in common references, but the term is formed from a borrowing of the base concept (“baas” or “base”) combined with “koormus,” meaning load or burden. Baaskoormus is helpful for describing the portion of demand that remains relatively stable across daily and weekly cycles, as opposed to peak or variable loads driven by weather, behavior, or economic activity.

Applications in grid planning involve identifying the minimum level of generation that must be available to meet demand at all times. This guides long-term capacity decisions, maintenance scheduling, and the selection of baseload-producing plants, such as certain nuclear, coal, hydro, or biomass facilities. In modern grids with high shares of renewables and flexible resources, the practical relevance of a strict base-load figure may be complemented or challenged by demand-side measures and energy storage.
