Axelslinga, or shoulder sling, is a simple device used to immobilize and support an injured arm by suspending it from the shoulder to reduce movement at the elbow and shoulder. It is commonly used in first aid, emergency medicine, and postoperative care.

A typical axelslinga consists of a length of cloth or a strap that forms a sling around the forearm, with the end supported at the neck or shoulder. The forearm rests with the elbow bent about 90 degrees, and the sling is padded at the neck to prevent pressure. Variants include simple triangular bandage slings and padded or figure‑of‑eight slings that keep the forearm secure against the chest.

Application: To apply, place the arm in the sling with the elbow at a comfortable angle, position the padded edge so it rests on the neck, and tie or fasten the ends so the sling supports the forearm up to the hand. The knot is usually near the elbow or over the opposite shoulder. The goal is to support the arm’s weight and minimize movement; the sling should be snug but not restrict circulation. After application, check that the fingertips are warm and pink.
