A typical avløpslinje consists of several components: waste pipes that carry toilet, kitchen, shower, and laundry wastewater; vent stacks that allow air to enter the system and prevent vacuum; and sometimes separate sanitary stacks for the stack of individual fixtures. The pipes are usually made of cast iron, PVC, or ductile iron, chosen for durability, resistance to corrosion, and ease of installation. Modern systems often use plastic fittings to reduce weight and installation time.

Installation of an avløpslinje must conform to local building regulations and the Swedish/ Norwegian plumbing codes. The slip joint method is common for connecting sections and ensuring easy replacement of segments. The entire line is laid at a consistent slope, normally between 1 % and 2 %, to ensure gravity flow; any deviation can lead to partial blockage or increased pump load. In some older buildings, the pipes must be manually cleaned or replaced, a process referred to as cleaning (avløpsrens).

Maintenance of avløpslinje focuses on preventing clogs, checking for leaks, and ensuring proper venting. Common maintenance tasks include periodic inspection by certified plumbers, chemical cleaning for grease buildup, and clearing of debris from overflow points.
