aversives
Aversives are stimuli that an organism finds unpleasant and that, when paired with a behavior, reduce the likelihood that the behavior will be repeated. In behavioral science, aversives are used to suppress undesired responses by creating an unpleasant consequence. Aversives can be primary (unconditioned) or conditioned (secondary) stimuli. Primary aversives are inherently aversive, such as pain or strong discomfort. Conditioned aversives are neutral signals that acquire aversiveness through association with an aversive outcome.
In operant conditioning, aversive stimuli may function as punishment to decrease a behavior (positive punishment) or
Contexts and ethics: Aversives are used in animal training, education, and some forms of human behavior therapy.
