"Autoritäärinen" is a Finnish adjective that translates to "authoritarian" in English. It describes a style of governance or behavior characterized by strict obedience to authority, at the expense of personal freedom. In a political context, an authoritarian regime centralizes power and limits political pluralism. Citizens have little to no say in government decisions, and dissent is often suppressed. Media is typically controlled, and civil liberties such as freedom of speech and assembly are curtailed.
