Autism affects approximately 1 in 54 children in the United States, although current estimates suggest that the condition affects people of all ages, including adults. A diagnosis of autism is typically made through assessment and evaluation by a medical professional, and treatment is often focused on promoting development and improving communication and social skills.

Parents and caregivers can play a significant role in promoting development in autistic individuals through the use of behavioral and educational therapies, such as applied behavior analysis and occupational therapy. Support and accommodations in educational settings can also help individuals with autism succeed in their academic and professional careers.
