Attributionsorð are a class of words used in Icelandic to attribute content to a source, typically referring to speech, thought, belief, or attitude. They commonly comprise verbs of saying, thinking, or claiming, and they may also include framing phrases that introduce reported content. In practice they enable indirect or reported speech by signaling the source of information.

The primary function of attributionsorð is to mark the origin of a statement or mental state and to shape how the content is interpreted. They often govern the structure of the accompanying clause, which is usually introduced by the conjunction að (that) in indirect speech, and they may require a tense backshift to align with the reporting time. For example, in indirect speech a sentence like “Hann sagði að hann væri þreyttur” (He said that he was tired) uses a reporting verb and a that-clause to convey the content of the assertion.

Attributionsorð include a range of verbs and phrases such as segja (to say), halda (to claim/think), telja (to suppose), and lýsa (to describe), among others. They can appear in direct speech as well, where the original utterance is quoted, or in indirect speech, where the content is reformulated. In Icelandic, the choice of attributionsorð can convey stance, certainty, hedging, or reliability, and different verbs may select different subjunctive or past forms in the embedded clause.
