Attackubåtar, or attack submarines, are naval submarines designed primarily to locate and destroy enemy ships and submarines, to gather intelligence, and to support special operations. Their primary counterpart is the ballistic-missile submarine, whose mission is strategic deterrence. Attack submarines are central to naval power projection in many fleets, operating in blue-water as well as littoral environments.

Design and propulsion: Modern attack submarines are built as diesel-electric or nuclear-powered platforms. Diesel-electric submarines may use air-independent propulsion (AIP) systems, such as Stirling engines or fuel cells, to extend submerged endurance without surfacing. Nuclear-powered attack submarines (SSNs) offer higher speed and global range, enabling rapid response and extended patrols. Crews are typically in the hundreds, and quieting technologies reduce detectability.

Armament and sensors: Attack submarines normally mount 533 mm torpedo tubes for conventional torpedoes and lightweight missiles. Some models can carry anti-ship missiles or mines and may include mine-laying capabilities. Sensors include passive and active sonar, periscopes or photonics masts, electronic warfare suites, navigation systems, and data links for networked warfare.

Operational use: They pursue hunter-killer missions against surface combatants and other submarines, conduct intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance, support amphibious or special operations, and impose temporary sea-denial in designated theaters. Stealth, endurance, and sensor fusion drive tactics, often exploiting the absence of enemy detection.

Swedish context: In Sweden, attack submarines are typically diesel-electric and often equipped with AIP. The Gotland-class and the newer Blekinge-class exemplify multi-mission attack submarines that emphasize stealth and endurance in the Baltic region. Globally, many navies operate diverse fleets of attack submarines, including those of the United States, Russia, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Japan, China, and others.
