Atlasy refers to a condition characterized by the presence of supernumerary nipples, also known as polythelia. These extra nipples can appear anywhere along the embryonic milk lines, which extend from the armpit to the groin on both sides of the body. The appearance of atlasy can vary, ranging from small, nipple-like bumps to fully developed nipples with associated areolae and even rudimentary glandular tissue.

The occurrence of atlasy is relatively common, with estimates varying, but it is generally considered a benign congenital anomaly. In most cases, atlasy is asymptomatic and does not cause any health problems. However, in some instances, the supernumerary nipples may become inflamed or infected, particularly during puberty or pregnancy due to hormonal changes. Some individuals may also choose to have them surgically removed for cosmetic reasons.

The exact cause of atlasy is not fully understood, but it is believed to be related to genetic factors that influence the development of the milk lines during embryonic development. It can occur in isolation or be associated with certain genetic syndromes. Diagnosis is typically made through a physical examination. Treatment is usually not required unless there are complications or cosmetic concerns.
