Atherosclerosis is a medical condition characterized by the thickening and hardening of artery walls. This process is caused by a buildup of plaque, which is composed of fat, cholesterol, and other substances. As plaque accumulates, it narrows the arteries, restricting blood flow. This narrowing can affect arteries throughout the body, including those supplying the heart, brain, and limbs.

The development of atherosclerosis is gradual and often begins in childhood. Early stages may show no symptoms. However, as plaque buildup progresses, it can lead to serious health problems. When arteries supplying the heart become narrowed or blocked, it can cause angina (chest pain) or a heart attack. Blockages in the arteries leading to the brain can result in a stroke. Atherosclerosis in the legs can cause peripheral artery disease, leading to pain and cramping during activity.

Several risk factors contribute to the development of atherosclerosis. These include high cholesterol levels, high blood pressure, smoking, diabetes, obesity, and a sedentary lifestyle. A family history of heart disease also increases risk.

Diagnosis typically involves a physical examination, medical history, and diagnostic tests such as blood tests to check cholesterol levels, electrocardiograms (ECGs), and imaging studies like ultrasound or angiography. Treatment strategies aim to slow or reverse the progression of the disease and prevent complications. These may include lifestyle changes such as a healthy diet, regular exercise, and smoking cessation, as well as medications to control cholesterol, blood pressure, and blood sugar. In some cases, surgical procedures like angioplasty or bypass surgery may be necessary to restore blood flow.
