Antikorroosion is a term used to describe methods and materials employed to prevent or reduce the corrosion of metals. Corrosion is a natural electrochemical process where a metal deteriorates due to chemical or electrochemical reactions with its environment. This deterioration can lead to structural weakening, loss of functionality, and aesthetic degradation.

Various strategies fall under the umbrella of antikorroosion. One common approach is the use of protective coatings. These can include paints, varnishes, enamels, or metallic layers like zinc (galvanization) or chromium. These coatings act as a barrier, preventing corrosive agents such as oxygen and moisture from reaching the metal surface.

Another important antikorroosion technique is cathodic protection. This method involves making the metal to be protected the cathode of an electrochemical cell. This is typically achieved by connecting it to a more easily corroded metal (a sacrificial anode) or by using an impressed current from an external power source. The sacrificial anode corrodes instead of the protected metal, thus preventing its deterioration.

Material selection also plays a crucial role in antikorroosion. Using alloys that are inherently resistant to corrosion, such as stainless steel or aluminum alloys, can significantly mitigate the problem. Furthermore, controlling the environment in which metals are used, for instance, by reducing humidity or the presence of corrosive chemicals, is also a form of antikorroosion. Proper design of metal structures to avoid trapping moisture or creating galvanic couples is another preventative measure.
