An anthill is a structure built and inhabited by a colony of ants, usually of the family Formicidae. It serves as the central refuge for the colony’s life activities, including rearing brood, storing food, and sheltering from environmental extremes. Anthills are often visible in the landscape and can range from small mounds a few centimeters in height to extensive complexes spanning several meters.

Construction of an anthill involves excavating soil and mixing it with chewed plant material, larvae, and secretions to create a cohesive substrate. Some species form distinct layers: a core chamber for the queen and larvae, surrounded by worker tunnels and nutrient storage cells. The walls may be lined with secretions that regulate temperature and humidity and deter predators. Certain ants, such as fire ants, produce a translucent cast over their mounds, while leafcutter ants build towering mounds composed of leaf fragments that check moisture and allow for heat dissipation.

Anthills provide several essential functions. The structure offers protection against predators and harsh weather. The temperature-insulating properties allow a relatively stable microclimate, which is vital for brood development. Many species use anthills for nesting during the day and foraging at dusk, thereby reducing exposure to heat. Some anthills have drainage systems that channel water away from the nest, keeping the interior dry.

The architecture of anthills varies with ant species and habitat. Ground-dwelling species often build shallow mounds, whereas some arboreal ants construct nest chambers in tree cavities rather than earth mounds. In tropical rainforests, ant mounds built by the fungus-farming Atta species can dominate the soil surface, while desert ants construct deep, narrow shafts to avoid heat.

Anthills influence ecosystem processes. Their construction aerates the soil, enhances nutrient cycling, and can alter plant community composition by affecting seed dispersal and germination. Ants also facilitate the redistribution of nutrients through their foraging activities and foraging networks. As such, anthills are considered keystone structures in many habitats.

Humans observe anthills for ecological studies, pest management, and educational purposes. While some African and South American ant species, such as the fire ant, become agricultural pests when their mounds invade crops, other ant colonies are valued for their role in controlling pest insects and for their contribution to biodiversity.
