An antennetuner, commonly referred to as an antenna tuner, is a device used to reconcile the impedance of an antenna system with the output impedance of a radio transmitter. Its primary purpose is to maximize power transfer and minimize reflected power, typically by reducing the standing-wave ratio (SWR) seen by the transmitter.

Most antennetuners are passive impedance-matching networks placed between transmitter and feedline or between feedline and antenna. They employ adjustable inductors and capacitors arranged in L, T, or Pi configurations to transform the antenna impedance to approximately the transmitter’s nominal impedance, such as 50 ohms.

Operation is straightforward: an operator adjusts the network while monitoring forward and reflected power or SWR until a satisfactory match is achieved. Modern automatic tuners use microprocessors to search for a match and can recall settings across different bands. Many units include built-in SWR meters, protection features, and interfaces to digital radios.

Limitations and caveats: a tuner does not improve an antenna’s intrinsic efficiency or create power where none exists; it merely makes the impedance match possible. If the antenna is severely mismatched, physically misdesigned, or operated far from its designed band, a match may be unattainable or may stress the transmitter. High-power applications require components rated for the expected voltages and currents.

Applications: antennetuners are widely used in amateur radio, shortwave broadcasting, marine, and field-operating setups where multi-band operation is desirable. In practice, users retune when switching bands or changing antenna configurations.
