High power refers to systems or components that deliver or dissipate large amounts of energy in a short time. In physics and engineering, power is defined as the rate of energy transfer, measured in watts (one joule per second). The term is usually contextual: an item may be described as high power relative to a reference device, and distinctions are made between instantaneous peak power and average power.

Thermal management methods include heatsinks, forced-air cooling, liquid cooling, and advanced thermal materials. Safety considerations are significant due to high heat, electrical shock hazards, arcing, radiation from lasers, and electromagnetic interference.
