Annihilationism is a theological belief concerning the final destiny of the unsaved. Proponents of this view, known as annihilationists, believe that instead of experiencing eternal conscious torment in hell, the wicked will ultimately be annihilated, ceasing to exist after a period of judgment or suffering. This concept contrasts with the traditional view of eternal conscious torment, which asserts that the souls of the unsaved will suffer endlessly.

Theological arguments for annihilationism often draw on interpretations of biblical passages that describe the end of the wicked as destruction, perishing, or death, rather than unending life in torment. Some scholars point to the Hebrew word sheol and the Greek word hades as referring to a place of oblivion or the grave, rather than a place of conscious suffering. The concept of "death" in scripture is sometimes interpreted as the complete cessation of existence. Additionally, some argue that eternal conscious torment is inconsistent with the justice and love of God.

Conversely, traditional views of hell often cite scriptures that speak of the "undying worm" and "unquenchable fire" as evidence of unending suffering. Opponents of annihilationism express concern that it might diminish the gravity of sin and the perceived severity of divine judgment. The debate over annihilationism is ongoing within various Christian denominations and theological circles, with differing interpretations of scripture and theological reasoning informing each perspective.
