Aneurysm is a medical term describing a localized, abnormal bulging or swelling in the wall of a blood vessel, most commonly an artery. This bulging occurs when the vessel wall weakens, allowing blood pressure to push outward and create a sac-like or balloon-like structure. While aneurysms can occur in any artery, they are most frequently found in the aorta, the body's largest artery that carries blood from the heart, and in the arteries of the brain.

The causes of aneurysms are varied and can include genetic predispositions, high blood pressure, atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries), trauma, and infections. In some cases, the exact cause may remain unknown. Many aneurysms do not cause symptoms and are discovered incidentally during medical imaging for other conditions. However, when symptoms do occur, they depend on the location and size of the aneurysm. Potential symptoms can include pain, a pulsating sensation, or neurological deficits if a brain aneurysm presses on nerves.

The primary concern with aneurysms is the risk of rupture. A ruptured aneurysm can lead to severe internal bleeding, which can be life-threatening and requires immediate medical attention. Treatment options for aneurysms depend on their size, location, and the patient's overall health. Small, asymptomatic aneurysms may be monitored, while larger or symptomatic ones may require surgical intervention to repair or reinforce the weakened vessel wall, often using endovascular techniques or open surgery.
