Amalgamatäyte, commonly known as a silver filling, is a dental restorative material used to fill cavities caused by tooth decay. It is a compound made from a mixture of approximately 50% elemental mercury and 50% alloy powder, which typically contains silver, tin, copper, and sometimes zinc. The alloy powder is triturated with liquid mercury to form a malleable mass that a dentist can shape and pack into a prepared tooth cavity. Once placed, the amalgam hardens through an amalgamation process, forming a durable restoration.
