Their name derives from the Latin *alveolus*, meaning "small cavity," likely referring to the distinctive features of their skulls or teeth.

Alveoliids are distinguished by their elongated, streamlined bodies and specialized dentition. Unlike many other ichthyosaurs, alveoliids possessed a unique arrangement of teeth, often with multiple cusps or ridges, which may have been adapted for capturing slippery prey such as fish or squid.
