Aluminija, commonly referred to in English as aluminium (symbol Al, atomic number 13), is a lightweight metal with a silvery-white appearance. It is the third most abundant element in the Earth's crust and is widely used because of its favorable combination of low density, high strength-to-weight ratio, and good corrosion resistance. In nature it is never found as a free metal; it occurs primarily as oxides in bauxite ore. The term aluminija appears in various languages as the inflected form of aluminium.

The metal is highly reactive with oxygen, but it rapidly forms a thin, dense oxide layer (aluminum oxide) that protects it from further corrosion. This passivation allows aluminum to resist weathering and makes it suitable for outdoor and structural use. It conducts heat and electricity reasonably well and can be easily alloyed with elements such as magnesium, silicon, and manganese to tailor properties for specific applications. Aluminum is malleable and can be rolled, extruded, drawn, or formed into complex shapes.

Production involves two main stages. First, bauxite ore is refined to alumina (Al2O3) via the Bayer process. Then, aluminum is produced through electrolytic reduction in the Hall-Héroult process, where alumina is melted and reduced to metallic aluminum. The process is energy-intensive, making electricity a major cost factor. Recycling aluminum requires only a fraction of the energy compared with primary production and is widely practiced worldwide.

Applications are diverse, including packaging (soft drink cans), transportation (aircraft, automobiles), construction, and electrical systems. Aluminum alloys enhance strength and durability in many products. Environmental considerations focus on energy use, waste streams from bauxite processing, and the benefits of recycling to reduce emissions.
