An akvaariumi is a transparent container designed to house aquatic life and plants in a controlled environment. It is usually made of glass or acrylic and filled with water, with equipment to maintain water quality and temperature. Aquaria are classified by the salinity of the water: freshwater, saltwater, and brackish setups. Freshwater aquariums are common for tropical fish and aquatic plants; saltwater aquariums often host reef communities or marine fish; brackish tanks combine elements of both.

A typical setup includes the tank on a stand with a lid, a filtration system (mechanical, biological, and sometimes chemical), a heater for warm tropical species, and appropriate lighting. Substrate and decorations support plants and provide hiding places. In planted tanks, CO2 supplementation and high-quality lighting may be used.

Before stocking, aquaria undergo cycling, establishing beneficial bacteria that convert ammonia to nitrite and then nitrate. This biological filter is essential for stable water quality. Regular maintenance includes partial water changes, substrate cleaning, filter maintenance, and monitoring of temperature, pH, hardness, and nitrate levels. Feeding should be modest to avoid water quality deterioration.

Ethical and ecological considerations include choosing appropriate species, avoiding release of aquarium inhabitants into the wild, and sourcing livestock responsibly. Public and educational aquariums also serve research and conservation roles, offering demonstrations of aquatic ecosystems and biodiversity.
