Akevitt is a Nordic distilled spirit typically flavored with caraway and other botanicals such as dill, fennel, or coriander. The name derives from aqua vitae, the Latin term meaning water of life, and the beverage has long been associated with Scandinavian culinary and festive traditions.

Production of akevitt starts from a neutral base spirit, usually derived from grain or potatoes. The flavorings are added by redistilling or by infusing the botanicals in the finished spirit. Caraway is the defining note, but producers may also use dill, fennel, anise, citrus peel, coriander, and other herbs. Most commercial akevitts are bottled around 40% ABV, with some varieties ranging from the high 30s to mid-40s percent.

Regional variations and aging: Akevitt is strongly tied to its Nordic origins, especially Norway and Sweden, with Denmark and Finland also producing notable versions.
