The arrangement with ning allows speakers to emphasize the total duration without resorting to multiplicative or additive calculations within the sentence itself.

The grammatical structure follows the standard Estonian rule for conjunction usage: the first time-interval noun is in the genitive case, the second time-interval noun is also in the genitive, and ning functions as a coordinating conjunction that connects them.
