Aivoverenkiertohäiriö, commonly known as a stroke, is a medical emergency that occurs when the blood supply to part of the brain is interrupted or reduced, preventing brain tissue from getting oxygen and nutrients. Within minutes, brain cells begin to die. Strokes can be caused by a blockage (ischemic stroke) or a rupture (hemorrhagic stroke) of a blood vessel in the brain.

Ischemic strokes are the most common type, accounting for about 87% of all strokes. They occur when a blood clot blocks an artery leading to the brain. This blockage can be caused by atherosclerosis, a condition where plaque builds up in the arteries, or by a clot that forms elsewhere in the body and travels to the brain. Hemorrhagic strokes occur when a blood vessel in the brain bursts, spilling blood into the surrounding brain tissue. This can be caused by high blood pressure, an aneurysm, or an arteriovenous malformation (AVM).

Symptoms of a stroke often come on suddenly and can include weakness or numbness on one side of the body, difficulty speaking or understanding speech, vision problems in one or both eyes, dizziness, loss of balance, or severe headache with no known cause. Recognizing these symptoms and seeking immediate medical attention is crucial, as prompt treatment can significantly improve outcomes and reduce the risk of long-term disability or death. Treatment depends on the type of stroke and can include medications to dissolve blood clots, surgery to remove clots, or surgery to repair ruptured blood vessels.
