Aivotärähdykset, also known as concussions, are a type of traumatic brain injury caused by a bump, blow, or jolt to the head or by a hit to the body that causes the head and brain to move rapidly back and forth. This sudden movement can cause the brain to bounce around or twist inside the skull, stretching and damaging brain cells and creating chemical changes in the brain.

Symptoms of a concussion can vary and may not appear immediately. They can include physical symptoms like headache, nausea, vomiting, dizziness, balance problems, and sensitivity to light or sound. Cognitive symptoms may involve difficulty thinking clearly, feeling slowed down, trouble concentrating, and memory problems. Emotional changes like irritability, sadness, or nervousness can also occur. Some people may also experience sleep disturbances, sleeping more or less than usual, or having trouble falling asleep.

Diagnosis of a concussion is typically based on a medical evaluation of symptoms and a review of the circumstances of the injury. There is no definitive test like a scan to diagnose a concussion, although imaging such as CT scans or MRIs may be used to rule out more severe injuries like bleeding in the brain.

Recovery from a concussion is usually gradual. Rest, both physical and cognitive, is crucial in the initial stages. Gradually increasing activity levels as symptoms improve is recommended. Returning to school, work, or sports too soon can prolong recovery and increase the risk of further injury. It is important to seek medical advice if a concussion is suspected, as a healthcare professional can guide the recovery process and advise on when it is safe to return to normal activities.
