An airstrip is a strip of land prepared for the takeoff and landing of aircraft, typically a single straight surface that may be paved, gravel, dirt, or grass. It is a basic form of airfield facility and is commonly found in rural, remote, or private settings where there is little or no terminal infrastructure. Airstrips are used by light general aviation aircraft, bush planes, and emergency or auxiliary operations, and they can function as temporary or supplementary facilities during larger aviation activities.

Design and features of an airstrip vary widely. Lengths and widths are dictated by the types of aircraft intended to operate there and can range from a few hundred meters to over a kilometer. Surfaces may be smooth or uneven and require regular maintenance to preserve a safe landing and takeoff area. Markings are often minimal, but, when present, may include runway numbers and centerlines; lighting or beacons may be installed for limited night or low-visibility use. A windsock is a common practical aid, and approaches should be clear of obstacles, with attention to terrain, vegetation, and overhead wires or structures.

Operations and usage involve planning and judgement by pilots. Operators must assess surface conditions, weather, wind, and any prevailing restrictions. Airstrips support private and recreational aviation, aerial surveying, medical evacuations, and temporary bases for larger operations. Access may be restricted or require permission, especially for private or farm strips, and public safety considerations apply to all use.

Construction and maintenance emphasize drainage, compaction, erosion control, and grass or vegetation management. Maintenance may be performed by property owners, operators, or local authorities, with adherence to applicable aviation regulations and local land-use rules. Airstrips are distinct from larger airports or official aerodromes, offering simplified, low-cost access points for aircraft.
