An airer, or clothes airer, is a portable frame or rack used for air-drying laundry. It typically consists of a base or stand with multiple arms or lines on which garments can be hung or laid out. Airers are designed for flexible indoor or outdoor use and are often foldable or collapsible for compact storage.

Common types include freestanding drying racks with several tiers, umbrella or rotary airers that open into a circular frame, wall-mounted or ceiling-retractable units for bathrooms or utility rooms, and portable travel airers. Some models incorporate integrated pegs, hooks, or hangers for small items. Drying racks may be made from wood, metal (steel or aluminum), or plastic.

Airers provide air-based drying at low or no energy cost, which is gentler on fabrics than tumble dryers. They rely on ambient air temperature, humidity, and ventilation. Their capacity varies by size; they can be compact for single items or larger for family loads. Disadvantages include slower drying in damp or cold conditions and the need for space and manual arrangement.

Maintenance is simple: wipe clean, dry after use, and inspect for corrosion, warping, or broken joints. Proper use can reduce wear on clothes and prolong the unit’s life. Environmental considerations include reduced energy consumption and lower greenhouse gas emissions when replacing electric drying with air drying.
