Agroindustries refer to the set of industrial activities that add value to agricultural raw materials through processing, packaging, distribution, and related services. They transform crops, livestock, fisheries, and other farm products into processed foods, feeds, textiles, biofuels, and other commercially useful commodities, often linking farming with manufacturing and trade.

The scope covers primary processing such as milling, oil extraction, and sugar refinement; dairy and meat processing; fruit and vegetable processing; aquaculture and seafood processing; textiles from natural fibers; and the production of bioproducts and bioenergy. Supporting activities include cold chains, storage, packaging, quality control, logistics, and regulatory compliance.

Value chains typically begin with input supply and farming, followed by harvest and primary processing, then secondary processing and packaging, and finally distribution to wholesale, retail, and food service. Technology and automation may be applied at various stages to improve efficiency, yield, and safety.

Economic role and regional variation are significant. Agroindustries provide jobs, contribute to rural development, and generate export earnings, with the scale and focus influenced by local resources, policy, and infrastructure. They are often clustered in regions with agricultural inputs, but require linked infrastructure such as reliable electricity, water management, transport, and storage facilities.

Environmental and social considerations include resource use, waste management, emissions, water efficiency, and land stewardship, as well as worker safety and fair labor practices. Sustainability standards and certifications are increasingly adopted to address consumer expectations and regulatory requirements.

Trends and challenges include rising demand for processed foods, climate variability, supply chain resilience, price volatility, and competition from large multinational players, along with opportunities in value-added processing, innovation, and public–private partnerships.
