An adhesioonitest (adhesion test) is a procedure used to determine the strength of an adhesive bond between substrates or coatings. The test measures the force required to detach the bonded surfaces under defined conditions and provides an indication of bonding quality. It is used across industries such as automotive, electronics, construction, aerospace, and packaging to validate bonding processes and compare materials and surface treatments.

Common methods include peel tests (90-degree peel or T-peel), pull-off tests (perpendicular tensile adhesion tests), and lap shear tests. In a peel test, the bonded joint is peeled at a constant angle and speed to obtain a peel strength. A pull-off test uses a stud attached to the surface and pulled perpendicularly to determine the tensile adhesion strength. Lap shear tests pull overlapping bonded substrates along the plane of the bond to measure shear strength. Tests are conducted with controlled environmental conditions and standardized specimen preparation, including substrate cleaning, surface pretreatment, and controlled adhesive thickness.

Procedures are described in standards issued by organizations such as ASTM and ISO. Typical reporting includes the measured strength (for example, in MPa or N/m) and the failure mode, which can be cohesive within the adhesive, at the adhesive–substrate interface, or within the substrate. The results are used to assess process consistency, material compatibility, and projected performance.

Limitations include sensitivity to substrate condition, surface energy, adhesive thickness, and aging. Adhesion tests provide useful comparative data but are not direct predictors of long-term service performance; they should be complemented with aging studies and application-specific testing to gauge real-world durability.
