Activitiesextraction is the process of identifying and extracting meaningful human activities from data, particularly video and sensor streams, to recognize, localize, and describe actions over time. It covers both the detection of action occurrences and their temporal segmentation within longer sequences, as well as the extraction of interpretable representations used in downstream analytics.

Data sources commonly include video, inertial measurement units (IMUs), depth sensors, audio, and GPS. Tasks associated with activitiesextraction include action recognition, temporal action localization, activity segmentation, and event detection, often under multimodal fusion constraints.

Typical approaches range from handcrafted feature pipelines—using spatiotemporal features, optical flow, and body pose estimates—to modern deep learning models such as 3D convolutional networks, recurrent networks, and transformer-based architectures. Multimodal fusion and weakly supervised learning are common to handle limited annotations. Computational efficiency and privacy considerations also shape method choice.

Evaluations use metrics such as accuracy or F1 score for recognition tasks, and mean average precision or intersection-over-union for temporal localization. Public benchmarks include Kinetics, UCF101, and HMDB51 for action recognition, and ActivityNet for temporal action localization.

Applications span sports analytics, surveillance and safety, healthcare monitoring, elder care, human–robot interaction, and smart environments. Challenges include variability in appearance and camera viewpoints, long-tail activity distributions, ambiguous boundaries between activities, annotation costs, and ensuring scalable, real-time processing across devices.
