Academicism is a term used to describe the set of artistic practices and principles associated with established European academies, notably the French Académie royale de peinture et de sculpture and its successors. It emphasizes adherence to traditional rules, orderly composition, technical mastery, and the imitation of classical models from antiquity and the Renaissance. In practice, academism often valorizes history painting as the highest genre, demands clear drawing, idealized forms, balanced proportion, and moral or exemplary subject matter, and promotes a standardized curriculum and professional status for artists.

Historically, academies crystallized standards from the 17th through the 19th centuries, shaping training, taste, and the canon of beauty. The approach extended beyond painting to music and literature, where learned institutions favored formal form, decorum, and the imitation of established models. While neoclassicism overlaps, academism denotes the institutional framework that sustained a particular ordering of art, often in tension with movements that pursued innovation.

In painting, academism promoted drawing from life, classical or mythological subjects, idealized figure types, and harmonious compositions; the hierarchy of genres favored history painting and high formal polish. Students were trained to produce works conforming to a recognized standard, and artists associated with the school emphasized technical facility and moral seriousness.
