Aanplanting is the act of placing live plants into soil to establish a new stand, garden, or agricultural crop. In Dutch horticulture and forestry it covers activities such as transplanting nursery stock to the field, planting trees and shrubs, and establishing perennials or crops in landscapes or agricultural settings.

The process typically involves selecting appropriate stock and site, preparing the soil, and using appropriate planting techniques. Stock can be bare-root, container-grown, or balled-and-burlapped. Planting methods include digging a hole of suitable size, placing the plant at the correct depth, backfilling and firming the soil, and providing initial irrigation. Spacing is species dependent and often ranges from a few tens of centimeters for ornamentals to several meters for trees. Seasonal timing commonly favors spring or autumn to reduce drought stress and promote establishment. Protective measures such as mulching, staking, and windbreaks may be used, along with initial pruning when appropriate.

Site preparation and planning are important for success. Soil analysis, drainage, pH, and nutrient status influence stock choice and fertilization needs. The choice of species or cultivars should fit local climate, soil, and intended use. Establishment density, irrigation plans, and weed control are integral to management during the first growing seasons.

Aftercare focuses on ensuring adequate moisture, protecting young plants from pests and diseases, controlling competing vegetation, and, in trees and shrubs, guiding growth through pruning or staking. Successful aanplanting results in a stable stand with healthy growth and long-term production or aesthetic value.
