Zurrspanner

Zurrspanner, known in English as a ratchet tie-down or lashing strap, is a securing device used to fasten cargo for transportation. It combines a flexible webbing belt with a ratchet buckle that provides mechanical advantage to tighten the strap and hold cargo firmly in place. The hooks or fittings at the ends attach to anchor points on a vehicle, container, or pallet, enabling a quick and repeatable method to secure irregular or heavy loads.

Construction and variants: The webbing is usually made of polyester for strength and low stretch, though nylon and other materials may be used in some applications. Typical widths are 25 mm (1 inch) and 50 mm (2 inches). The ratchet mechanism allows the user to apply high tension with controlled increments. Some variants use flat hooks, chain end fittings, or adjustable minimum-length designs to suit different cargo and anchor configurations. Many straps are rated with a working load limit (WLL) and a break strength, with WLLs spanning from a few hundred kilograms to several thousand kilograms depending on width, material, and design.

Standards and safety: Zurrspanner are commonly manufactured to regional load-restraint standards such as EN 12195-2 in Europe, which cover performance, marking, and testing requirements for lashing straps. Users should inspect straps before each use for cuts, fraying, UV damage, and bent hooks. Straps must not be used beyond their WLL, and damaged or worn straps should be removed from service. When in use, the strap should run flat, be protected from sharp edges with edge guards, and be tightened gradually without twisting.
