Zircon (ZrSiO4) is highly resistant to weathering and retains isotopic information, making detrital zircons valuable for U-Pb dating and studies of crustal evolution and provenance. The presence of zircon can range from trace amounts to a sizeable portion of the mineral assemblage, and accurate reporting often involves quantifying zircon abundance or concentration.

In materials science, zirconia-containing ceramics and glass-ceramics incorporate ZrO2 as a phase within a ceramic matrix. Yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) is widely used for its fracture toughness, strength, wear resistance, and thermal stability. In geology, petrographic analysis and cathodoluminescence can help identify zircon grains; in ceramics, phase analysis confirms zirconia content and stabilization.
