Zin

Zin is a common shorthand for Zinfandel, a grape variety widely grown for red wines in California and for the blush style known as White Zinfandel. The term also refers to wines produced from this grape, which range from full-bodied reds to lighter, fruit-forward pink wines.

Genetic studies in the 1990s established that Zinfandel is the same variety as Primitivo (Primativo) in Italy and as Crljenac Kaštelanski in Croatia. The vine likely arrived in the United States in the 19th century, where it found a particularly favorable climate in California. It became a dominant premium red grape in the state by the early 20th century, with plantings disrupted by Prohibition and later revived in the late 20th century.

Winemaking styles vary with climate and winemaker intent. Red Zinfandel is typically full-bodied with high alcohol, dark fruit flavors, and spice, often incorporating oak aging. White Zinfandel is a popular off-dry blush wine made by stopping or delaying fermentation, yielding lighter, fruit-forward flavors such as strawberry and melon.

Flavor profiles commonly include blackberry, raspberry, plum, pepper, and licorice, with tannin structure ranging from soft to moderately firm. Alcohol levels frequently run higher than many other red wines, though styles vary widely.

Geographically, California is the core region, with notable subregions including Sonoma, Napa, Paso Robles, Lodi, and Amador. Outside the United States, the grape’s Croatian and Italian connections are recognized through its genetic ties to Crljenac Kaštelanski and Primitivo.

In usage, “zin” functions as a convenient shorthand in wine circles, covering both the grape and its diverse wine styles.
