Zielabstand

Zielabstand, literally "target distance" in German, is a general term used in engineering, military, sport, and optics to denote the distance from an observer, sensor, or instrument to a target. It is a fundamental input that affects measurement, aiming, focusing, and system performance.

In ballistics and targeting, the Zielabstand is needed to compute the firing solution. Elevation, wind corrections, and timing depend on the range to the target. For moving targets, the distance combined with velocity yields a lead angle and predicted intercept time. In artillery, rifles, and guided projectiles, accurate range information improves accuracy and safety.
