Zetetic

Zetetic is an adjective derived from the Greek word *zetētikos*, meaning “seeker” or “inquirer.” It describes a method of inquiry that emphasizes questioning, critical examination, and experiential evidence over unquestioned authority or tradition. The term is most commonly associated with the zetetic school of thought, which originated in ancient Greece and was later revived in the modern era as a form of skeptical investigation.

Historical roots can be traced to the works of the philosopher Aristotle, who advocated a philosophy of inquiry grounded in observation and hypothesis testing. In ancient texts, the term was used to describe individuals who pursued knowledge through systematic questioning. During the Renaissance, a small group of scholars, sometimes referred to as the “Zetetes,” resisted dogmatic assertions and championed empirical methods. In the 20th century, the concept was popularized by William James, who coined the phrase “Zetetic practicality” to refer to a pragmatic approach that privileges direct experience and evidence over metaphysical speculation.
