Yövuorotyöstä refers to work performed during the nighttime hours, typically from approximately 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. This type of employment is common in sectors that require continuous service, such as healthcare, transportation, manufacturing, emergency services, and information technology. In many countries, night shift workers form a significant portion of the labor force, and their work schedules are often regulated by labor laws and occupational health guidelines.

The health implications of night shift work have been extensively studied. Disruption of circadian rhythms can lead to sleep disorders, impaired cognitive performance, increased risk of cardiovascular disease, and metabolic disturbances. Scientific research also links long-term night shift work to a higher incidence of certain cancers. Employers are encouraged to implement measures that mitigate these risks, including sufficient rest periods, controlled lighting conditions, and promoting healthy lifestyle habits among workers.

Several countries have specific regulations for night shift workers. For instance, the European Union Directive 2003/10/EC requires employers to conduct risk assessments for night work and to provide workers with appropriate health monitoring. In Finland, the work environment act (Työasialaki) mandates that employers must evaluate the health risks associated with night work and take preventive actions. Compensation mechanisms, such as extra pay, time-off, or health coverage, are often part of the legal or contractual arrangements.

Effective management of night shift work involves careful scheduling to ensure adequate rest and shift rotation. Practices such as forward-rotating schedules, limiting consecutive night shifts, and ensuring recovery time can improve worker well-being and productivity. Many organizations now employ multidisciplinary teams—comprising occupational health professionals, human resources, and management—to design shift systems that balance operational demands with employee health.
