Yökastelua

Yökastelua, also known as nocturnal enuresis or bedwetting, is the involuntary urination during sleep that occurs after the age at which bladder control is typically expected. In most children, this age is around five years old. It is a common condition, affecting a significant percentage of children, and is more prevalent in boys than girls.

The causes of yökastelua are varied and can include a combination of factors. These may involve delayed development of bladder control, genetics, a smaller bladder capacity, or the body producing more urine at night than can be stored. In some cases, sleep disorders, such as obstructive sleep apnea, can contribute. Medical conditions like urinary tract infections, diabetes, or constipation can also be underlying causes, though these are less common than the developmental factors.

Diagnosis of yökastelua typically involves a review of the child's medical history and a physical examination. In most instances, further medical testing is not required. Treatment approaches depend on the age of the child and the underlying cause. For younger children, strategies often focus on patience, reassurance, and behavioral methods like fluid restriction before bedtime, scheduled awakenings, or using a bedwetting alarm. For older children or when a medical cause is identified, specific medical treatments may be prescribed. It is important to note that yökastelua is not typically a sign of a serious medical problem and most children eventually outgrow it.
