Yorkies

Yorkies refers to Yorkshire Terriers, a small terrier breed that originated in the industrial towns of Yorkshire, England. The breed was developed in the late 19th century from a mixture of Yorkshire terriers that were originally bred to control rats and mice in wool mills and the smallest terriers imported from America. In 1903 the American Kennel Club officially recognized the Yorkshire Terrier as a distinct breed.

Yorkshire Terriers are known for their feathery coat, which comes in a two‑tone color pattern commonly described as “bluecoat and tan.” The breed averages 5 to 7 inches at the shoulder and weighs around 7 to 14 pounds, making it one of the smallest dog breeds. The breed’s hair is long and lies close to the body, providing a luxurious appearance but requiring regular grooming to prevent mats.

Yorkies are energetic yet affectionate, known for their confident, spirited demeanor. They are intelligent and eager to please, which makes them responsive to training. However, they can be wary of strangers and may exhibit a strong prey drive toward small animals.

Health concerns common in Yorkshire Terriers include dental problems, patellar luxation, and a predisposition to an autoimmune disease known as hypoadrenocorticism. Routine veterinary care, a balanced diet, and regular exercise help mitigate these conditions.

The breed’s popularity has been reflected in popular media, such as the cartoon character “Austin Powers: Monster Mash” and the television series “Friends,” where the dog’s small, shabby appearance made it iconic.
