Yhteistalouden

Yhteistalouden is a Finnish term describing an economic logic and set of practices based on sharing, collaboration, and collective ownership rather than individual accumulation. It serves as an umbrella for models such as cooperatives, mutual aid networks, social enterprises, and platform-based initiatives that prioritize social and environmental goals alongside or above profit. In English-language discussions the concept is sometimes related to the sharing economy or the solidarity economy, but in Finnish usage it often highlights democratic governance, community resilience, and non-market values.

Etymologically, yhteistalouden combines yhteis- (common, collective) with talous (economy). The genitive form yhteistalouden means “of the co-economy.” Distinctions from the broader sharing economy concern emphasis on collective ownership, governance by members, and social aims, though overlaps with market-based platforms exist.

Key features include participatory decision-making, mutual aid and solidarity, local focus, pooling of resources, cooperative or user-owned ownership structures, and a focus on sustainability and social inclusion. It frequently employs circular economy practices, shared services, and community-driven initiatives to increase resilience and reduce social and environmental costs.

Development and context reflect roots in the wider social economy and cooperative movements, with particular resonance in Finland and Nordic policy discussions. The concept has grown alongside debates about sustainable development, urban resilience, and local economic diversification, often intersecting with digital platform experimentation and policy support for cooperative models.
