The most widespread scheme labels years with numerical year and era indicators, such as AD (Anno Domini) or CE (Common Era), and BC/BCE for years before the era. The move toward CE/BCE in scholarly and many secular contexts aims for neutral terminology while preserving historical year counts. In practice, different sources may mix forms depending on audience and discipline.

Other year designations reflect political and cultural systems. Regnal years count years from a monarch’s accession, and era names (nengō in Japan, Chinese dynastic eras, Hebrew calendar years, Islamic Hijri years) provide alternative labels for the same time periods. Some calendars carry multiple, overlapping designations.
