Wunderfigur

Wunderfigur (literally "wonder figure" in German) is a term used in German-language contexts to describe a figure, object, or person that inspires astonishment or is believed to have miraculous qualities. The word combines Wunder, "wonder" or "miracle," and Figur, "figure" or "image." In religious contexts, Wunderfiguren are devotional images or statues associated with miracles, healing, or protective powers. Such objects often became the focus of local cults and pilgrimages, and their attribution of miraculous properties was typically reinforced by legends, testimonies, and church authorities.

In folk Catholicism across German-speaking regions, certain Marian or saint statues, crucifixes, or painting images acquired reputations as Wunderfiguren, sometimes leading to increased veneration, processions, and icon restoration efforts. The label can also be applied more broadly to any figure thought to exemplify extraordinary merit, skill, or charm, including famous performers, athletes, or political figures; in journalism, "Wunderfigur" may be used metaphorically to emphasize exceptional promise or achievement.

In art and material culture, Wunderfiguren can refer to small devotional figurines made of ceramic, wood, or other materials that were sold or traded for use in private devotion.
