Wundbasis

Wundbasis refers to the bottom layer of a wound. It is the tissue that remains after the superficial layers have been damaged or removed. The appearance of the wound basis can provide important information about the healing process and the type of wound.

Different types of tissue can be found at the wound basis. Granulation tissue, which is red and bumpy, indicates that the wound is healing and new blood vessels are forming. Slough, a yellowish or grayish, soft, stringy tissue, is dead or dying tissue that needs to be removed to allow for healing. Necrotic tissue, also known as eschar, appears dark brown or black and is hard and leathery, signifying dead tissue that has not yet been removed.

The condition of the wound basis is a critical factor in wound assessment and management. A healthy wound basis with healthy granulation tissue typically signals good progress. Conversely, the presence of slough or necrotic tissue indicates a need for debridement, which is the process of removing dead or unhealthy tissue to promote healing. The wound basis can also be assessed for signs of infection, such as redness, swelling, increased pain, or purulent exudate. Understanding the composition and condition of the wound basis helps healthcare professionals choose appropriate wound care strategies and treatments.
