Wrap

Wrap is a term with multiple meanings across food, packaging, clothing, and technology.

In cuisine, a wrap refers to a dish made by rolling fillings inside a flatbread or tortilla, typically served as a portable meal. Common fillings include grilled meats, vegetables, beans, cheese, and sauces. Wraps are similar to sandwiches but use flatbread that is rolled rather than stacked. Variants include the burrito, which is usually larger and may contain rice and beans; shawarma and döner wraps, which use seasoned meat and sauces; and falafel wraps popular in Middle Eastern and Mediterranean cuisines. The term became common in fast-casual dining in the late 20th century as a convenient, customizable option.

Wrap also denotes materials or processes used to enclose items. Plastic wrap, cling film, aluminum foil, or paper wraps cover, protect, or bundle goods. Shrink wrap tightens around products with heat; wrap can aid preservation, moisture protection, labeling, and branding during storage and shipping.

In clothing, a wrap is a style of garment formed by fabric draped across the body and fastened at the side or back, such as a wrap dress or wrap skirt. Wrap shawls and scarves use the same principle, offering adjustable fit and a draped silhouette. The design appears in many cultures and has various fabrics and lengths, from lightweight to heavy.

In computing and media, wrap describes the way text automatically continues on the next line when it reaches a display edge or a column. It also refers to completion signals in film production—“That’s a wrap” marks the end of principal photography, often followed by a wrap party.
