Security and performance considerations are important. Poorly written plugins can create security vulnerabilities, slow down sites, or cause conflicts with other plugins or themes. Best practices include installing from reputable sources, checking reviews and compatibility notes, testing updates on a staging site, keeping plugins updated, and limiting the number of active plugins.

For developers, creating a plugin involves defining metadata in a header, using WordPress hooks, and following coding standards. The plugin ecosystem is supported by documentation, community forums, and governance guidelines maintained by WordPress.
