Wischblende

A Wischblende is a vehicle body panel—commonly known in English as a cowl panel or wiper cover—mounted at the base of the windshield to conceal and protect the windshield wiper linkage, motor and associated components. The German compound word combines wischen (“to wipe”) and Blende (“cover” or “shutter”), and is used in automotive design and maintenance contexts.

Functionally, the Wischblende directs rainwater away from the engine bay and passenger compartment, channels drainage to designated outlets, reduces ingress of leaves and debris, and contributes to aerodynamic flow and noise suppression. It often incorporates attachment points for the wiper motor, mounting brackets, air intake openings for cabin ventilation, washer-jet outlets, and access panels for service.

Materials and design vary by make and model; most modern Wischblenden are injection-molded plastics or composite materials, while older vehicles may use painted steel. Designs may include integrated seals, mesh screens, or drains to improve weather resistance and airflow. Some vehicles use a single molded piece, others a multi-part assembly to ease repair.

Common service issues include clogging of drainage channels, degradation or cracking of plastic, corrosion of metal brackets, and rattles from loose fasteners. Routine cleaning of debris and inspection of seals and drains prolongs component life and prevents water intrusion into the vehicle interior.
