Winkelskalen

Winkelskalen is a term used in German and Dutch to describe graduated scales for measuring angles. The name derives from "Winkel" (angle) and "Skala" (scale). Winkelskalen appear on a wide range of instruments—protractors, theodolites, sextants, rotary tables, machine tools and optical mounts—where controlled angular measurement or setting is required.

Typical winkelskalen are circular or arc-shaped and marked in degrees and submultiples (minutes, seconds) or in radians. Precision devices incorporate vernier scales, micrometer drums or optical encoders to allow readings finer than the basic graduation. Modern implementations increasingly use electronic angle encoders and digital readouts that provide direct numerical angle values and interfacing for recording or control systems.

Applications include surveying and geodesy, navigation, astronomy, mechanical engineering, and machining. In surveying instruments such as theodolites, winkelskalen are combined with sighting optics and levels to measure horizontal and vertical angles; in machine tools they permit accurate setting of tool or workpiece orientation.

Accurate use of a Winkelskala depends on careful calibration, calibration records, and attention to mechanical wear, temperature effects and alignment errors. Maintenance typically involves cleaning, checking for backlash, and recalibration against standards. The term is often used interchangeably with "Winkelskala" (singular) and corresponds conceptually to the English phrase "angle scale" or "angular scale."
