Windmill
Windmills are structures that convert kinetic energy from the wind into mechanical energy for milling, pumping, or generating electricity. Traditional windmills use a set of large sails mounted on a rotating windshaft to drive millstones or pumps. In modern usage, the term often refers to wind turbines, which convert wind energy directly into electrical power through a rotor connected to a generator.
Historical development: The concept dates back to medieval times. The earliest widely documented windmills appeared in
Design and operation: Sails capture wind; windshaft transfers rotation to a gearing system; stone millstones for
Modern wind turbines: Many meters tall; three- or multi-blade rotors; nacelle houses gearbox and generator; variable-pitch
Cultural and environmental aspects: Windmills are cultural landmarks in the Netherlands and elsewhere; several mills are
