Widetooth

Widetooth is a proposed wireless communication framework designed to connect intraoral devices—such as smart dentures, dental implants, sensors, and orthodontic appliances—to external hosts like smartphones, patient portals, or clinic systems. The goal is secure data exchange, remote monitoring, and device management within the constraints of the oral environment.

The name blends wireless connectivity with dental applications and is used in speculative designs and early industry discussions. There is no universally adopted standard named widetooth, and existing references typically refer to general wireless protocols adapted for healthcare or dental use.

Conceptual analyses describe low-power, short-range radio performance in moist, constrained spaces, with bidirectional data, device authentication, and encryption. Some proposals envision mesh topologies where multiple intraoral devices relay data to a central receiver. Interoperability with Bluetooth Low Energy is often discussed, usually via bridging.

Applications include real-time health monitoring of sensor readings, firmware updates for dental devices, and remote diagnostics. Potential benefits are improved patient monitoring, reduced clinic visits, and enhanced device security.
