Weltraumtrümmer, also known as space debris or orbital debris, refers to discarded human-made objects in orbit around the Earth. This includes a wide range of items from defunct satellites and spent rocket stages to tiny fragments from collisions and even paint flakes. These objects pose a significant risk to operational satellites and crewed spacecraft due to their high orbital velocities. A collision with even a small piece of debris can cause substantial damage, potentially leading to the destruction of a satellite.

The problem of space debris has grown considerably since the beginning of the space age. Initially, space was perceived as an infinite expanse where discarded materials would pose no issue. However, the increasing number of launches and the lack of effective disposal strategies have led to a crowded orbital environment. The Kessler Syndrome, a theoretical scenario, suggests that the density of space debris could reach a point where collisions create a cascading effect, rendering certain orbits unusable for generations.

International efforts are underway to monitor space debris and mitigate its growth. Organizations like NASA and the European Space Agency track thousands of objects in orbit. Strategies for debris mitigation include designing satellites for de-orbiting at the end of their operational life, preventing the intentional destruction of satellites, and developing technologies for active debris removal. Despite these efforts, the challenge of managing space debris remains a critical concern for the future of space exploration and utilization.
